Glossary:

A Lesson: a one to one teaching period.
A rehearsal: a regular practice with a group, aiming for a specific concert/recital.
Practice: homework on an instrument/song, repeating something difficut carefully again and again untill it becomes easy. Without daily practice there is no chance of progressing. “Talent” incudes the the patience and determination to do it. It’s the parent’s job to remind children each day and insist they do what the teacher has set that week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbaO_I7_TEA
A class: usually refers to a group of academic students. We don’t use this word for individual lessons or orchestra.
A song: a melody which is sung, usualy with words.
A piece: an item of music of any kind, often instrumental.
The composer: the author of the piece of music (top right corner of the sheet).
The arranger: a writer who changes the original version of the piece to suit a different group of players.
A solo: a piece played by one featured player (occasionally with piano accomaniment).
An accompaniment: usually refers the added piano part supporting a solo iteam.
A conductor: a leader/teacher who stands at the front to keep a large ensemble in time.
The score: the conductor’s sheet containing all the notes of each instrumnet of a group, all on one page.
A part: the individual player’s sheet (“I’m playing the 2nd clarinet part in this piece”).
A chamber piece: an item played by a very small ensemble, one part each person.
An Orchestra: a larger group of musicians without singers, usualy, but not exclusively, performing western classical tradition.
A band: a less formal word for orchestra usually featuring wind, brass and drum kit in this case.
A choir: many people singing a song together.
Chamber Concert/recital: a “show” featuring solos and chamber items.
Main Concert: our big show with larger goups, orchestras and choir.
