What do all these terms mean?
Rehearsal
A rehearsal is a regular practice of a particular group, usually aiming towards a concert or recital.
Concert / Recital
A concert is a show where one or more groups perform to an audience.
A recital is a show performed by one person, or a small group, to an audience.
Concerts and recitals can include many different pieces of music within them, and the pieces can be of similar or different styles.
Practice
Practice involves homework on an instrument or song, usually repeating something carefully again and again until it becomes easy. Without daily practice, progress is difficult and slow. “Talent” includes the the patience and determination to do practice.
It’s the parent’s job to remind children each day and insist they do what the teacher has set that week.
Song / Piece
A song is a melody which is sung with the voice, usually with words.
A piece is an item of any music, and usually refers to music with instruments.
Composer
The person who has written or created a piece. Their name is usually printed on the top right hand corner of the sheet music.
Arranger
A writer who reworks the original version of the piece to suit a different group of players.
Solo
A piece, or part of a piece, played by just one player. A solo can be with or without accompaniment.
Accompaniment
Accompaniment is the music that supports a melody or solo, and is often played by the piano.
Arranger
A writer who reworks the original version of the piece to suit a different group of players.
Conductor
A leader or teacher who usually stands at the front of an ensemble. Their purpose is to make sure the group plays together, and ensure the group plays with the right dynamics and style.
Score
The score is a large sheet of music which contains all of the individual parts together. This means the conductor can see what every part is playing.
Part
A part is the sheet music of an individual player or group of players within the wider orchestra.
Orchestra
An orchestra is a large group of musicians, generally comprised of strings, as well as wind, brass, and percussion instruments.
Orchestras typically play western classical music, although orchestras can play in many different styles.
Band
The term Band can mean many different things, and is used to describe groups which are formed slightly differently to a standard orchestra.
Bands can be formed of just wind, brass, and percussion instruments, or even smaller groups of instruments, and they often play music later than the classical era.
Choir
Choirs are groups of singers, and can be of any size.
